“Utkal Lakshmi” sarees are not just any handwoven handloom saree. The name is synonymous with Utkal - Meaning Orissa/ Odisha, and Lakshmi - as a reference to Goddess Lakshmi...which is synonymous to all girls/ daughters.

The saree gets its name from the Goddess of Wealth and Prosperity, Laxmi, and the ancient name of Odisha, Utkal. It is said that the saree was first introduced in the Sambalpur region of Odisha, which is known for its rich textile heritage.

The saree also has a deep significance in the lives of the weavers who make them. Weaving has been a traditional occupation in Odisha, and the Utkal Laxmi Sambalpuri Saree is a source of pride for the weavers who have inherited the art from their ancestors. The saree is a symbol of their cultural identity and a means of livelihood for many families.

The making of Utkal Laxmi Sambalpuri Saree involves a complex process of dyeing, weaving, and finishing. The saree is made using the double ikat technique, which involves dyeing the yarns before they are woven into a fabric. The yarns are carefully tied and dyed multiple times to create intricate designs and patterns. The weavers use a traditional loom to weave the fabric, and the process is time-consuming and labor-intensive.

Sambalpuri sarees are known for their incorporation of traditional motifs like shankha (shell), chakra (wheel), phula (flower), all of which have deep symbolism with the traditional craftsmanship of the ‘Bandhakala’, the Tie-dye art reflected in their intricate weaves, also known as Sambalpuri “Ikkat”. In this technique, the threads are first tie-dyed and later woven into a fabric, with the entire process taking many weeks.
